Databases & On-line Data in Astronomy

A book published by Kluwer Acad. Publ. (1991)
Miguel A. Albrecht & Daniel Egret(Editors)

Data archiving was for many years the most disregarded aspect of all data systems. Over the past two decades, the increasing efficiency of cameras and photon collecting devices used by astronomers, especially for space--borne astronomy or ground--based surveys, has generated an unprecedented accumulation of data. But only a small part of the data is immediately used in the investigations that was planned for, and eventually published, hence the need for powerful and flexible archiving systems.

The book presents a wide selection of databases, archives, data centers, and information systems in astronomy as of April 1991. Clear descriptions are included, together with their scientific context and motivations. All of the systems described in the book still exist. Up-to-date access pointers have been added to the abstracts of the original papers.

This volume is complemented by Information & On-line Data in Astronomy, the second book in this series published by Kluwer Academic Publishers.
