Why are metadata standards essential for interoperability?
Metadata = Data about data; information describing the nature of the data (origin; spatial, temporal, and spectral properties; calibration; relationships)
Without metadata we have only pixels, data values, without meaning
Without metadata standards we do not know that apple = apfel = pom. Metadata standards are our lingua franca, our Esperanto.
Metadata standards establish the basis for understanding meaning
