Details on Acronym: IGR IGR (INTEGRAL Gamma-Ray source)
N: about 2000
Object:(Gamma) (SIMBAD class: gamma = gamma-ray source)
Note:The INTEGRAL satellite is ESA's gamma-ray observatory mission, in orbit since 2002. It contains four instruments: a gamma-ray imager (IBIS), a gamma ray spectrometer (SPI), an X-ray monitor (JEM-X) and an optical monitor (OMC). Due to its unprecedented sensitivity, the large field of view of the instruments, and in particular the good imaging performance of the IBIS instrument, INTEGRAL regularly discovers new high energy (gamma-ray) sources. Catalogs of new sources are being published (e.g. 2004ApJ...607L..33B), while many individual detections are reported as Astronomer's Telegrams (http://www.astronomerstelegram.org). Observers who discover a new source in their data are also requested to use the IGR designation. More about INTEGRAL can be found on the following web sites: http://www.rssd.esa.int/Integral http://isdc.unige.ch 2003IAUC.8063....3C : first ref. with IGR object, and the only one listed here.
